  • Escientia’s plant blast in Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, has resulted in 17 deaths and injuries.
  • The accident is the worst in the region in recent times, with over 100 companies’ factories located in the SEZ.
  • The incidents raise questions about the state of industrial safety in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in the SEZ.
  • Workers attempted to plug a solvent leak of the chemical/solvent MTBE, which fell on an electrical panel, leading to a fire and blast.
  • Trade unions and activists are calling for stringent punishment and a thorough safety audit of all units at the SEZs and elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh.

  • The series of accidents calls for a broader probe, including in SEZs in Andhra Pradesh, to fix any existing loopholes and punish non-compliance with safety norms.
